CATHY SUMMERS

Master of Nursing Student

Twenty years ago if you had told me I would be in a management position in a nursing home, I would likely have laughed at you!  At the time, I was a stay at home mother to 3 beautiful sons and had no immediate desire to go back to school or what I would even take if I did. I am always amazed at the paths life leads me down! Only 4 short years later (and one more child), I started working in a nursing home as a personal support worker (PSW) and enrolled in the practical nursing diploma program at Georgian College. Now twenty years later I am working on my Master of Nursing (I love learning and am always looking to expand my knowledge base). In the last 20 years I have worked as a PSW, Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), and a Registered Nurse (RN) in a wide range of nursing positions that included: Long Term Care, Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, and Step Down Unit. I am excited to see what the future has in store! I choose the quote below because I feel that while we cannot change the world around us, we can change how we adapt and react to it. That while continually working on self-improvement, we are gaining the skills and knowledge to interact with the world in a positive way.

"DON'T WISH IT WERE EASIER, WISH
YOU WERE BETTER.
DON'T WISH FOR FEWER PROBLEMS,
WISH FOR MORE SKILLS.
DON'T WISH FOR LESS CHALLENGES,
WISH FOR MORE WISDOM.”
